The Union Pacific is now a huge railroad composed of the merger and acquisition of the Missouri Pacific, the Chicago and Northwestern, Southern Pacific and original Union Pacific Railroad
This railroad is 150 years old, having survived two world wars and many national crises
In 1848, 10 miles of the Galena & Chicago Union Railroad was completed, beginning the railroad era in America
On July 4, 1851 groundbreaking took place for the Pacific Railroad which was the direct predecessor or the Missouri Pacific Railroad
At Buffalo Bayou near House, the first rails of the soon to be Southern Pacific are laid
In 1862 the Union Pacific is chartered by Congress and this act was signed by Abraham Lincoln with the expressed purpose of creating a rail link from east to west across the country, a necessary part of the westerward expansion after the Civil War
