Geocaching is a hobby, a game, a passion where one uses a GPS (Global Positioning System) to locate places that someone else believes you may be interested in visiting for some reason. There are many different types of caches, as listed below. It has been my experience that almost all are either at a very scenic area or one of historic or cultural significance. I learned about this hobby in the summer of 2004 when there was an article in our local paper discussing the phenomenon. My wife and I were almost instantly intrigued and since we already owned a GPS, we set out to learn more and before you knew it, we were hopelessly hooked!

I have had a Garmin E-Trex Vista GPS for years but only used it for trips in the car. I had no idea this hobby was out there and going strong. We have been out on geocaching excursions several times and have 'found' almost all the sites within 60 or 70 miles from Rawlins. Needless to say, we have to go farther and farther away to find new caches. But what a wonderful excuse to go on a 2 or 3 day 'vacation' and do some geocaching in the process. When we started, years ago, there were only 300 caches in Wyoming but there are now over 1000! Since we first purchased our original Garmin E-trex Vista, we have purchased two more units. The second was a Garmin 60C and we enjoyed it a great deal for about 2 years. Recently we upgraded to the Garmin 60CSx, the same basic unit but with a few features we found very attractive. Our newest GPS has the capability to utilize a memory card so we can have more mapping available on the unit. The receiver is more sensitive and more reliable and we really enjoy using it. We bought a laptop in the Spring of 2006 and use it in conjunciton with the GPS to direct us to our destinations with voice commands (very helpful). Almost every cache we have been to was scenic, historic, cultural or a combination of the three.

We have even gotten our year old grand-daughter interested in the hobby and have taken her a couple times. It is indeed so much more fun with a child with so much energy along, she keeps Ga and Papa going, makes it even more fun and we have had some great outings!

If you are interested and need more information, send me an e-mail and although I am just a beginner, I will pass along any knowledge I have. Please return to this page as I intend to add more information and links to this page in the coming weeks and months. Have fun!
